TMJD

TMJD

TMJD is an abbreviation for Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (or Disorder or even Disease). This is a disorder of the Temporo-Mandibular joints that allow the jaw to articulate. These joints allow for a wide range of motion because of their complexity. It is also this complexity that can allow for such a wide range of TMJ Dysfunction symptoms. Treating this disorder can be difficult but it should not be ignored.

It is believed that TMJD is caused by a bad alignment of the bite that keeps the TM joints out of position. When the joints are out of position the jaw muscles work to correct the position and become over worked and strained, eventually causing spasming. The over-worked jaw muscles cause pain, tooth grinding and the spasming can even cause problems with the inner ear that cause ringing in the ears and dizziness. Even the neck muscles can be affected causing pain and more dizziness.

Treatment of TMJD often proves difficult because of the misunderstandings about the cause of TMJ Dysfunction. Dr. Padolsky developed a special TMJ program for treatment. The first step is to relax the muscles to end pain. This is done with a TMJ soft guard. Once this has been accomplished the next step is to correct the bite, this can be done through a number of different methods including a TMJ hard guard, orthodontics or other dental work. In some extreme cases TMJ surgery may be needed but Dr. Padolsky believes in using this option only as a last result.
