Dr. Padolsky's initial TMJ treatment for all of his patients is to relax the jaw muscles and eliminate the associated jaw muscle pain. Most of the TMJ pain that patients suffer with is due to the inflammation and overuse of the associated jaw muscles. One or both temporomandibular joints shift out of place when the TMJ patient bites or swallows. This dislocation compresses the very tender tissue in the back of the TM joint and the jaw muscles attempt to protect and hold the joints in a better more forward position.
TMJ treatment must address the fact that as the jaw muscles attempt to hold the jaw joints forward, they first tighten in place. As they overwork, they become inflamed. This is called myositis. Myo- meaning muscle and -itis meaning inflammation. After a short period of time, waste products build up inside the muscles and they become painful. This is called myalgia. Again, myo- meaning muscle and -algia meaning pain.
TMJ treatment begins with a lower soft decompression guard which holds the jaw joints down and forward. Since the soft guard protects the joints, the jaw muscles can relax since they no longer have to hold the joints in place. Most patients feel much better within a week. In addition to the guard, Dr. Padolsky insists that his patients, at least for a few weeks, develop a muscle healthy lifestyle. He developed his six week TMJ program for this purpose.
