The goal of TMJ therapy is for the TMJ patient to be pain free and functioning without any attention on the TM joints. TMJ treatment is done in phases with each phase aimed at accomplishing a specific task. The first phase begins with improving the condition of the jaw muscles since most TMJ pain comes from muscle dysfunction.
The next step of TMJ therapy is finding the patient's correct bite. In the correct bite, both of the temporomandibular joints are positioned in their ideal positions. This relieves the pressure within the joints and allows the muscles to relax. Decreased joint pressure sets the stage for the insides of the joints to heal.
The second phase of TMJ therapy is finalizing a more permanent bite position at the best bite position determined in phase one. This can be accomplished several ways. A permanent removable TMJ appliance, TMJ orthodontics, or crown and bridge restorations can all be used to establish a new more harmonious bite.
