TMJ Symptom Treatment
TMJ symptom treatment is somewhat of a misnomer. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. When people have problems caused by this joint it is called temporo-mandibular joint disorder, or TMJD for short. TMJD can cause many unpleasant symptoms that end up affecting not just your mouth and head, but your entire body. TMJD often goes undiagnosed and is often treated incorrectly.
TMJ symptom treatment is important in relieving the discomfort of the symptoms but there is a catch. Treating the symptoms alone will often do nothing to treat the TMJD that is causing the symptoms. TMJD treatment should focus on correcting the cause of the symptoms not just the symptoms themselves. TMJD can cause many different problems that may seem at first to be unlinked to the TMJD.
TMJ symptom treatment often starts with a TMJ mouth guard. This guard is designed to be worn at night and realigns the jaw and joints so that pressure is relieved. It also prevents tooth grinding, a common symptom of TMJD. TMJ massage can help relieve jaw pain and is helpful in TMJD treatment because it soothes and relaxes the jaw muscles. Pain relievers will help relieve jaw pain and headaches while undergoing treatment but should not be used alone without treating the TMJD.
