TMJ Pain

tmj pain

TMJ pain can be terrible and nothing seems to help. Part of the reason for this is that TMJ syndrome is often mis-diagnosed and mis-treated. Without the correct TMJ treatment, the condition will persist and the pain will continue. A knowledgeable dentist who has been trained in treating TMJ Disorders is essential but a dentist is often not enough. There are often many associated medical conditions surrounding TMJ syndrome and a dentist:physician team is often required for success.

TMJ pain often involves the small neck muscles just under the base of the skull. This can be quite confusing since these muscles are on the opposite side of the head as the mouth. However, when these muscles contract, it pulls the head up and stretches both temporomandibular joints. The stretching often relieves the discomfort.

Since most of the TMJ pain comes from the chewing muscles, applying heat to both sides of the face can often bring temporary TMJ pain relief. The true cause of the TMJ problem, an imbalanced jaw joint, has not be corrected but the discomfort is often significantly reduced with moist heat. Physical therapy helps but will not correct the cause of TMJ and so the pain will persist. A dental appliance is absolutely necessary in most TMJ patients.
