TMJ Cause

Many people suffering from TMJ pain misunderstand the TMJ cause. In truth Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorder is a commonly misunderstood problem, not only by patients but by physicians and even dentists as well. The Temporo-mandibular Joints are located on either side of your head just in front of and slightly below the ears. This is where the jaw (mandible) is connected to the skull at the temporal plate, thus the name.

When there is a problem with the joints, the TMJ cause significant discomfort that can cause real pain. It is believed this is caused by a misalignment of the jaw that places too much stress and the joints. TMJ symptoms then branch out from this one problem. TMJD can cause jaw pain, neck pain, headaches, ringing in the ears known as Tinnitus, dizziness and insomnia. Treating the symptoms does nothing to treat the cause of TMJD and therefore the condition will only get worse.

The TMJ cause is not always the same for each person. When misaligned the joints cause the jaw muscles to tense up causing pain. Sometimes the TMJ discs pushed forward and stretches the ligaments that hold this disc. This damages the ligaments and will cause the disc to flop on and off of the bony condyle, thus making popping and clicking noises. When the ligaments are overstretched, they tear or lengthen without returning to their normal shape.
