TMJ is an acronym for Temporo-mandibular joint. These are the joints that connect the jaw (mandible) to the base of the skull at the temporal bone. There are two of these joints, one on either side of the head. The joint allows for an incredible range of articulation due to it's unique shape with two separate protrusions called condyles.
TMJ is often mistakenly used as an acronym for Temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction, which, would more rightly be called TMJD. It is not known exactly what causes TMJD so it is often difficult to treat. One popular belief among denstist is that the disorder is caused by a misalignment of the jaw and joints that puts undue stress on the joints and jaw muscles, causinga host of unpleasant TMJ symptoms.
TMJ is an acronym referring only to the joints, not the dysfunction that caused discomfort in the jaw. The D in TMJD can stand for either dysfunction, disorder or disease. TMJD treatment begins with a correct diagnosis of TMJD. Many people experience TMJD symptoms without ever seeking treatment. A TMJ treatment plan is then custom made for each patient but usually includes a TMJ guard as well as TMJ exercises and TMJ massage.
