Jaw pain is one of the most common and often most severe symptoms of Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction. While jaw discomfort is extremely common TMJD can also present with a variety of symptoms, some of which seem to have nothing to do with the jaw. In fact the positioning of the joints means that any problem there can cause varying symptoms while affecting more than just the jaw.
TMJ jaw pain is most often caused by stress placed on the jaw muscles. TMJD is often caused by a misalignment of the way you bite down, called the occlusion. This misalignment places a great deal of stress on the joints and therefore the muscles of the jaw. The cause of TMJ headaches is also has to do with the muscles. The jaw muscles attempt to reposition the joints and become strained. This strain can grow worse over time and the muscles will begin spasming causing headaches.
Many patients try to cover up this jaw pain with pain relievers. Unfortunately this does not remedy the problem and only allows the true problem to grow worse. Without remedying the cause of TMJ Dysfunction the symptoms will only grow worse over time. The first step to TMJ treatment is relaxing the muscles, generally with a soft guard that is custom formed to your mouth and worn at night.
